B-A-S-I-C-S of obedience to God.
B... Be filled with God's Spirit (the Holy Spirit).Jesus called God's Spirit the Comforter, which literallymeans "one called alongside to help." That'swhat God's Spirit wants to do for us. We are commandedto "keep on being filled with the HolySpirit."9 As we daily open our inner selves to God,he will fill us with his Spirit and in so doing, empowers us to serve him.
A... Abide in Christ. Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I inhim, bears much fruit.10 In other words, if our livesare to be fruitful, we need to abide in Christ. We dothis by spending time with him in his word, inprayer, and in living for him in our daily life.
S... Serve the Lord. The happy Christian is theserving Christian. Contentment comes from livingbeyond ourselves and helping others. James wrote,"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure andfaultless is this: to look after orphans and widows intheir distress and to keep oneself from being pollutedby the world."11
I... Importance of putting God first. God hasgiven us everything we have, including the power toget wealth.12 In olden times God required his peopleto tithe; that is, to give one-tenth of their income toget God's work done. When they did this faithfullyGod promised to bless them greatly.13 It is a wiseinvestment and responsibility for Christians to dosimilarly. We need to tithe or give proportionatelynot only of our income, but also of our time and talentsto get God's work done today.
C... Clean living and confession are also essentialfor physical, emotional and spiritual health. Ourgoal needs to be not to sin, but when we do we needto confess our wrong and put things right, "If weconfess our sins," writes John, "he is faithful andjust and will forgive us our sins and purify us fromall unrighteousness.14 Accept God's forgiveness byfaith and be sure to forgive yourself.
S... Sunday has been called by many the Lord'sday. It's not the day in the week that is important, but rather, that we set time aside each week to worshipGod with other people. God's word says, "Letus not give up meeting together."15 Attending achurch where God's Word is believed and taughtand where people love one another is very importantfor worshipping God, for strengthening ourChristian faith, for learning more about God, and forfellowship with fellow Christians. Jesus went to"church" himself every week. We need to do the same.
(1) Learn God's Word: Lots of people think of the Bible as just another self-help book—filled with helpful ideas, good stories and interesting history. The Bible is the most unique book of all history! It is the only book that is completely inspired by God Himself and contains His living words. God wants to speak to you, and the easiest way He will do it is through reading the Bible. Did you know that everything in life is a result of God’s word? The world was created by His word; you are saved by hearing and believing His word; and you grow into a stronger Christian by obeying His word. If you start early in your Christian journey reading, thinking about, and obeying the Bible, you lay a firm foundation for the rest of your life—one where you will receive direction, become wise, be made successful, and lead others to Christ. You don’t have to go through life hoping and guessing; you can know the truth and grow by God’s word!
(2) Be Involved in Church: Life as part of the Body of Christ. Many Christians believe belonging to a church is unnecessary, when in reality, it is the greatest privilege! The church is not a building—it is the group of all believers across the world. Jesus’ main focus is the church: He died for it, He is committed to building it, and He is returning for it. God wants every person to be a part of a local group of believers so that you can grow, work together for God, and serve each other. The book of Acts shows us that when people become Christians, they are added to the church. The structure of the church can be compared to that of a large company: The company may have multiple locations; an employee works at a particular location. In the same way, God wants you in a local church, since you are part of the larger, universal church. It is in His church that you gain knowledge, family support, grow to maturity, and fulfill the work of the Lord.
(3) Spend Time With God: Learn to spend time with God in fellowship. When you chose to follow Jesus, you entered into a new and unique relationship with God: through Jesus Christ, God blesses you and listens to you! The Bible says, “The eyes of the LORD watch those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help” (Psalm 34:15). When you pray—talk to God—He hears. Did you know that prayer is one of our most powerful ways to see God move in our lives? Often, Christians do not pray because they do not know its power or because they do not know how. Praying, like anything else in life, takes practice and instruction. Lance Armstrong wasn’t always a well-known cyclist—he had to first learn how to ride a tricycle. You might feel like you’re just learning how to ride the bike of prayer, but don’t give up! The instruction of the Bible and praying regularly will make you a prayer warrior..
