Some time ago I received a telephone call. When I answered the phone, the voice on the other end said: “Bang! You’re dead!” I paused. I didn't quite know what to think about what had been said to me. Then I heard a familiar voice, that of James Campbell, a client of mine: “John, just calling to remind you that we all need to die to ourselves every day.” That is true. There is always room at the top for anyone who is willing to say, “I’ll serve,” and means it.
Several years ago I was listening to Zig Ziglar. In his presentation, he said, “You’ll always have everything in life that you want, if you’ll help enough other people get what they want.” When I heard that statement, something went off on the inside to me. Right then, I made an absolute decision to live that concept every day. The atmosphere of my life changed. My life has not been the same since.Despite our tendency toward self-promotion, it is always true that more is accomplished when nobody cares who gets the credit. Before looking for a way to get, look for a way to give. One of the most powerful decisions you can make in your life is to do something for someone who does not have the power or resources to return the favor. When you give of yourself to help other people, you cannot help but be abundantly rewarded. The rewards and blessings of being a servant always extend far beyond the scope of what you can see or hear. The giver always gets.
